Ceremonies

Convocation will be split into two ceremonies by school.

Morning Ceremony: 10 am

8–9:30 am: Registration and Check-In (Main Campus Doors)

Welcome to Convocation!
 

  • Start at registration. You will receive a card with your name and program on it. This will be your ticket for getting on stage.
  • You will be directed to The Pit to pick up your gown, cap, tassel and stole.
  • There is no coat check, so please leave valuable items at home. Any items left in the gown room, are left at your own risk. This is the last chance to go to the bathroom before the procession.
  • You now look like a grad! Head to your student meeting room and to be called to the gym. 
9:40–9:55 am: Line Up for the Procession
  • You will be called in the holding room to line up in the hallway leading from the main door. Your position in the line is important! You will be seated in the gym and called on stage according to this order.
9:55 am: Procession into the Gym
  • Gowned employees will follow the piper and students will follow the faculty and staff. Please keep in formation and follow the directions of your ushers.
  • Students are seated
10 am: Ceremony 
  • Selkirk College Community Drummers
  • President’s welcome
  • Speeches
  • During the final speech, a Selkirk College staff member will usher students behind the curtain/stage to line up to be called on stage. Follow the directions of the Selkirk College staff members behind the curtain/stage—you will want to appear when your name is called.
11–11:30 am: Post-Ceremony Photo
  • The photo! Please listen for directions on where the photo will be taken based on weather.
  • If the photo is taken outside, students will be led out of the gym to group up on the grass while a photographer takes their photo from the roof.
  • If the photo is taken inside, all guests will be asked to leave the gym and the students will be led to the bleachers to have their picture taken.
  • After the picture is done, grads and guests are invited to join in a celebratory tea and snacks in the main campus building.
  • Please return your gown and stole by 12:30 pm. If it is not returned, you will be charged $300 per item outstanding.

The Lower Sentinel wing is at the back of the Castlegar Campus. Please follow the directions of the parking lot attendants.

12:40–12:55 pm: Line Up for the Procession

Student and Guest Information

  • There is plenty of parking and accessible parking is available. Attendants will direct you. 
  • Doors open to the gym for seating one hour before the ceremony. Seating is first come, first served.
  • Selkirk College is a scent-free area, even for Convocation. 
  • The cafeteria is closed. Limited drinks and snacks will be available for purchase in the bookstore.

Leading the Ceremony: Sturgeon Scale Paddle

The ceremony will be led by a Sturgeon Scale Paddle made by artist and scholar Shawn Brigman, PhD. Dr. Brigman is an enrolled member of the Spokane Tribe and a descendant of the Columbia Plateau First Nations: snʕáyckst (Sinixt), sənpʕʷilx (San Poil) and Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc (Shuswap).

Using materials from the land, the artist has beautifully captured the relationship between people, the land, and the rivers, lakes and mountains of the traditional territories on which Selkirk College is so honoured to operate. The seven sturgeon scales inscribed on the paddle signify the seven life teachings of humility, courage, honesty, wisdom, truth, respect and love.
