Celebrate SDG Month

For SDG Month 2025, Sustainable Selkirk is hosting a student speaker series called Students for Sustainable Development highlighting talks from current or past Selkirk College students that address one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Open to anyone in the community, attendance is by donation to support the Giving Days sustainability cause of developing applied learning projects on-campus that enhance and protect biodiversity.

Selkirk College was the first Canadian post-secondary institutions to sign onto the SDG Accord for the world’s colleges and universities. The accord is designed to bring awareness to the SDGs, track progress and allow institutions to commit to working toward the Sustainable Development Goals.

How Bikes Can Challenge Car-Centric Thinking

My name is Greg and I'm just a guy who really likes bikes. Bikes have been a huge part of my life, from having raced bikes, worked in the bike industry and made great friends through the bike community.

By exploring by bike all over, it took me quite some time to realize how significantly cars shaped our cities and our lives. I’ve come to understand that when we build cities for cars, we create barriers to healthier and more livable communities. I believe bikes are a solution to a lot of issues we face in our urban environments. Riding bikes is also always fun!

Sustainable Development Goals: A Tenant Union Perspective

Hi, I'm James Barbeiro (He/Him). I'm a second-year social work student and a housing advocate. I'm originally from Northern Ontario, but have been in the Kootenays for five years and I have loved every moment. I helped start the Nelson Tenants Union and helped tenants fight the harmful effects that arise from our current housing paradigm. I'm very proud of this volunteer work and hope to see Canada tackle the Sustainable Development Goals that are in line with changing our tired housing paradigm that divides, exploits and blocks access to sustainable housing.

Pathways to Sustainability: Advancing Clean Energy, Responsible Consumption, and Climate Action

My name is Simran. I am a dedicated and passionate Health Care Assistant Diploma student at Selkirk College, known for my methodical approach to projects and disciplined work ethic. With a strong commitment to avoiding procrastination, I consistently deliver high-quality work. Outside of academics, I enjoy practicing yoga, meditation, and singing, which help me maintain balance and focus in both my personal and professional life. In my upcoming talk, I will address three interconnected Sustainable Development Goals: Affordable and Clean Energy, Responsible Consumption and Production, and Climate Action. I will explore how these SDGs play a vital role in shaping a sustainable future, with a focus on the importance of accessible clean energy, reducing waste, and taking proactive steps toward mitigating climate change. By sharing my insights, I aim to inspire others to take responsible action toward a more sustainable world, highlighting the potential of collective efforts in creating positive change.
