What is an eligible program/course?

A minimum of three weeks and 10 hours each week OR a minimum of three weeks and no less than 12 hours per month.

Please note that courses must be at a post-secondary level, and that Academic Upgrading and English Language Program courses are not eligible. Learn more about eligibility.

Do I need my social insurance number (SIN)?

Yes. The CRA requires a Tuition and Enrolment Certificate, T2202, to display a student's social insurance number (SIN). Your SIN can be added via your student portal or in person at a Selkirk College campus.

How do I get my tax receipt?

Your Tuition and Enrolment Certificate tax receipt form can be printed by accessing your online student record and will be available by February 28 for the previous year. These forms will no longer be mailed except by request.

Am I eligible for a tax receipt?

Students who paid over $100 in combined tuition and eligible fees during the previous calendar year and who were registered in an eligible program or course, as defined above, are eligible for a Tuition and Enrolment Certificate (T2202) tax form.

What if I'm not a Canadian citizen?

All students, Canadian or international, are eligible for a Tuition and Enrolment Certificate tax form. You should discuss with your tax consultant or Canada Revenue Agency: International Students Studying in Canada to find out if you are entitled to claim the tuition.

Why does my tax receipt not equal the tuition I paid for the year? 

Only tuition and eligible fees are included for a tax deduction. The student society fee is not included. Also, if your enrolment starts in one tax year and ends in the next tax year, then the tuition (only) for all courses is pro-rated for each year, based on the number of days attended in each year.

For instance, courses taken from September 3, 2020, through to April 12, 2021, will only have a portion of tuition on your 2020 tax receipt and the balance on your 2021 tax receipt. This will be based on 120 calendar days in 2020 and 113 calendar days in 2021, a total of 233 days enrolled.

Why does my tax receipt not display?

To view the tax forms online, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader software. You can get the free program at www.adobe.com, or you can use the Adobe Reader icon that is on the web page when you select the year and click on the Get Tax Form button.

If you have an Apple computer, note that the built-in file previewer will not read this file correctly—you must use the Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Can I get a tax receipt for courses taken through professional development and training? 

Students taking an *eligible certificate or diploma program or other post-secondary-level courses through professional development and training who paid over $100 in combined tuition and eligible fees during the previous calendar year are eligible for a T2202 tax form.

Some continuing education courses that improve skills toward an occupation may be *eligible for a Tuition and Enrolment Certificate tax receipt if students are 16 years or older before the end of the school year. To determine whether courses you have taken are *eligible, please login to your online student record and view your current Tuition and Enrolment Certificate.

Can someone other than myself get my tax receipt? 

No. A Tuition and Enrolment Certificate is only issued to the student, regardless of whether the student is sponsored by someone or someone else paid the tuition. However, you may be able to transfer tuition amounts to other individuals, and there is a form included with your tax receipt to do so.

Can I still get my tax receipt even if I have outstanding tuition fees or owe a fine? 

Yes. Tuition and Enrolment Certificate forms are always issued and are not withheld due to outstanding fees or fines.

Your Tuition and Enrolment Certificate will reflect fees paid for the relevant tax year. If you remit outstanding payments for the previous year, after the T2202s have been created and posted, an amended T2202 will be available to you by the end of February the following year.

What is the meaning of the program name that is showing up on my T2202 tax receipt?

The title of the program in which you were registered in the previous calendar year is listed on your Tuition and Enrolment Certificate form.

If you were registered in more than one program, we have selected the one in which you were enrolled for the longest time during that year.

Can I get a tax receipt for my co-operative education courses? 

Hours that students take in co-operative education courses will not be included in the calculation of their full/part-time months on their Tuition and Enrolment Certificate form.

Tuition amounts that students pay for co-operative education courses continue to be included on the Tuition and Enrolment Certificate form.
