Frequently Asked Questions: Tuition & Fees

What if I can’t pay by the due date?

You can request a deferral, if you are expecting funds to arrive after the due date.

Deferral Options

  • Student loans: If you’ve applied for Canadian government student loans, you can defer payment until your loan arrives.
  • Selkirk College scholarships/bursaries: If an award is being applied to your account, pay the remaining balance by the due date and the amount of the award can be deferred. This option is for Selkirk College awards only. Example: Balance owing is $2,500, you have a $500 scholarship, so you’ll need to pay $2,000 by August 12.
  • Other: If you’re waiting on other funds (such as RESPs, external awards, family support or a paycheque), you can defer until the end of the first week of classes.
What happens if I don’t pay and am not eligible for a deferral?

Students who do not pay their fees on time will be removed from their courses and taken off waitlists. Those seats will be made available to other students.

Can I re-register if I’m removed from my courses for non-payment?

Yes, if there is still space available and it’s before the last day to add classes for the term. Tuition and fees will be due in full at the time of re-registration.

Why are fees due before classes start?

Historically, some students have registered in courses, decided not to attend and have not informed Selkirk College. In order to ensure these seats are made available to other students in time for them to register, we need to know in advance if everyone who is registered is planning to attend, and collecting fees is the most effective way to do that.

What if I’m being sponsored?

If your sponsor is paying Selkirk College directly, you must ensure that we receive your sponsorship form before the payment deadline. Your fees will be automatically deferred, and we will invoice your sponsor. If your sponsor is paying you directly, you’ll need to pay by the deadline or request a deferral under the “Other” category.

Do I need to pay for the full year right now?

No, you only need to pay the tuition and fees for the upcoming term. If you have charges on your account for a future term, those will be due three weeks before that term starts.
