Log Scaling & Grading

Category

This is a preparatory course for individuals interested in applying for the Ministry of Forests theoretical and practical Interior Log Scaling Exam. Taking this course does not guarantee a Log Scaling licence. Students are responsible for studying the Log Scaling manual, practicing the calculations necessary and being proactive in their approach to learning the Log Scaling trade.
Students will have opportunities to learn both in the classroom and in the field. They will gain hands-on experience on dryland log sorts, learn the steps required in weight scaling, grade logs, and identify log species. Students will learn through lectures, self-directed study supported by homework help and instructor-led practical sessions in log yards around the Castlegar area.

NOTE: This intensive course prepares students to write the Ministry Scaling Exam. The exam will be scheduled within 30 days of the end of the course. Candidates are responsible for applying to take the exam by completing the Application to Scale (attached) and paying the Scaling Exam Fee. A grade of 75% is required to pass the exam. A scaling license may then be issued to the successful candidate by the Minister’s delegate and entered into SCS.

Application forms are readily available at any Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development office and online at: http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/pscripts/isb/forms/forms.asp?query=query&subarea=24
