Kim Green

Before Selkirk College...

Kim has worked as a geoscientist for over 30 years throughout western North America. She graduated from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 1986 with a BSc in Geology and from the University of Calgary in 1990 with an MSc in Geoscience. Her early years in geology were spent as a Research Geoscientist with the BC Geological Survey Branch where she undertook regional geological mapping in the Cassiar Mountains, Nechako Plateau and the Chilcotin Plateau.

In the mid 1990’s, Kim made the switch to Environmental Geology and undertook additional education and certification in the field of geotechnics and geomorphology at UBC. Her initial years as an environmental geologist were spent with the BC Ministry of Forests as the Assistant Research Hydrologist (Nelson) and District Earth Scientist (Arrow). Since 1997, Kim has been working closely with stakeholder groups undertaking watershed assessments to provide guidance to minimize impacts to water quality, quantity, channel stability and function for forest development in community and domestic watersheds.

In 2014, Kim completed her Doctorate where she investigated the influence of land cover change on snow melt watershed hydrological and channel response. Her research interests focus on understanding the processes controlling channel form, stability and ecosystem function of mountain streams in forested, snow melt dominated watersheds.

Life Long Learning

Selkirk College has been part of Kim's lifelong learning experience since moving to the Kootenays in the 1990's. Selkirk College provides so many essential services to the Kootenay Region and she is excited to be a part of it. Kim has been involved as a guest lecturer in a number of courses in the past and now, is very pleased to be able to regularly share her passion for Geoscience with students.

With 30 years of applied geoscience experience to draw on, Kim is able to engage students by sharing with them from her own experiences and to mentor students interested in pursuing a wide range of geoscience careers. She will also be seeking opportunities to share her experience and knowledge as a watershed geoscientist with the broader Selkirk College community in order to contribute to and strengthen existing programs.

The opportunity to shift from full-time consulting to teaching is very exciting for Kim. She looks forward to the opportunities and new experiences that this position brings. Kim also looks forward to sharing with students with the most current tools and knowledge to succeed in their educational pursuits and she is   excited about the opportunity to participate in applied industry/Selkirk College research initiatives.

Outside Work...

When Kim isn't working, she enjoys sailing on Kootenay Lake in her 22' Catalina (Firefly), being a soccer mom, gardening and hiking with her three dogs.
