Instructor, Early Childhood Care & Education
Becky began her journey in post-secondary education at Selkirk College over 25 years ago, earning an early childhood education (ECE) certification followed by a diploma in Child & Youth Care (CYC). She then continued undergraduate studies in CYC at the University of Victoria graduating in 2003. While completing her undergraduate studies in CYC, Becky had the opportunity to spend a study term in a childcare setting in Japan and conduct an internship in a historic democratic educational setting in England, enriching her experiences in cultural approaches to both the early years and child and youth programming.
Upon graduation, Becky's experience expanded to include working within a variety of childcare settings--both rural and urban--including coordinating municipal recreation camps, facilitating school-based child and youth programs, facilitating and mentoring youth in philanthropy through a non profit foundation as well as coordinating school district wide violence prevention programming and parent education programs. In 2013, Becky returned to her educational journey, to complete a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from Yorkville University and practice as a registered clinical counselor with a primary focus on children, youth and parent support.
Since her employment with Selkirk College, Becky has had the opportunity to develop her instructor practice by completing the Provincial Instructors Diploma (PIDP), develop knowledge and understanding of indigenizing practice and teaching, leading the ECE program with facilitating Work Integrated Learning, updating advance certificate programs including inclusive practices and infant/toddler as well as having an opportunity to attend a five-day study group at Reggio Emilia, Italy. Additionally, working closely with the Early Learning Framework has further enriched her practice as an early childhood educator teacher.
When Becky is not teaching, you might find her in her garden or hiking the mountains around her home in the beautiful Kootenay region.
