In observance of the Transgender Day of Visibility on March 31, the transgender pride flag has been raised at the Castlegar Campus. The flag speaks to Selkirk College’s dedication to creating an environment that celebrates diversity and a culture of inclusion for all.
In recognition of the Transgender Day of Visibility, the documentary Disclosure was screened for students, employees and community members.
A student led a discussion after the film, which takes an unprecedented, eye-opening look at transgender depictions in film and television, and features leading trans creatives and thinkers sharing heartfelt perspectives and analysis about Hollywood’s impact on the trans community.
“It was great to see positive role models for the trans family,” commented one student. “The intersectionality of oppression was well illustrated. I found the discussion portion really engaging, thanks to the facilitator, community members, staff and students. It really seemed like all of the attendees were personally invested in working through the difficult times we are in.”
The event was an opportunity to foster learning, discussion and connection.
“It was important to provide space for learning and dialogue,” says Healthy Campus Coordinator Katie Comrie. “We are committed to supporting our 2SLGBTQIA+ students in every way possible, and that includes acknowledging the lived experience and myriad of obstacles that queer youth encounter daily. That’s a key aspect of creating an environment where all of our 2SLGBTQIA+ students can safely and confidently engage in their roles as learners.”
