Education Council

Education Council (EdCo) is an internal governance body of Selkirk College—required by the College and Institute Act—that considers educational policies about planning, operations, evaluation and standards.

EdCo advises the Selkirk College Board of Governors on approving, evaluating, suspending and cancelling programs and courses and implementing new programs and courses. EdCo approves curriculum content for all credentials in accordance with Policy 8101: Academic Programs and Policy 8102: Credentials, Recognition and Credit Standards

Membership

EdCo comprises a diverse group of college employees that oversees educational offerings and ensures a high level of academic quality for all students. Learn more about Education Council membership.

Structure

Standing Committees

EdCo has four standing committees that oversee ongoing EdCo business. Each committee has its own terms of reference and membership composition. Each committee meets regularly and advises EdCo.

Task Forces

In addition to the standing committees, EdCo also strikes task forces with specific tasks and short time frames (for example, one academic year). They are created by EdCo resolution and serve to advise the council on focused business.

Task forces are made up of EdCo members and can include non-members, depending on the group’s terms of reference.

Schedules, Agendas and Minutes

EdCo typically meets nine times per year on the second Tuesday of the month, either in person or online.

Governance Submission Schedule

Timelines for program and course change submissions are set to coincide with the academic schedule and are detailed in the governance submission schedule. For guidance on creating or updating courses or programs, see policies 8101: Academic Programs and 8102: Credentials, Recognition and Credit Standards

Education Council is an excellent group where a variety of perspectives can inform academic governance decisions as part of the college’s governance system. I love seeing all of the different programs and courses that flow through the council, where I can learn more about the value the college provides to its students.
