Education Council Members

EdCo has 21 voting members, representing students, employees and leadership. Learn how you can take part

All members serve a two-year term with the exception of students who serve a one-year term. EdCo contains four elected students, four administrators who are appointed by the president, two elected support staff, one Indigenous member and 10 elected faculty members.  

The faculty includes one member from each educational area: 

  • Academic Upgrading & Development
  • Arts & Technology
  • Business
  • Environment & Geomatics
  • Health & Human Services
  • Hospitality & Tourism
  • Industry & Trades Training
  • University Arts & Sciences

There is member from Applied Research, Student Success, and Teaching and Learning, and one member at large. 

Member Responsibilities

Member responsibilities include approving academic policies, guidelines for admissions and standards, and curriculum content for courses and programs. Members spend approximately four to six hours per month on EdCo responsibilities.

EdCo members exercise their best individual judgement in accordance with the college’s mission, vision, values and strategic directions. All eligible members vote freely on all issues considered by EdCo, regardless of their association with a particular portfolio or area of the institution.  

Duties of the chair, vice chair and assistant

Duties of the Chair

The duties of the chair include but are not limited to:
 

  • Work with the assistant to call and set agenda for EdCo meetings
  • Preside at all meetings of the EdCo 
  • Correspond as delegated by the EdCo 
  • Serve on all standing committees and task forces, unless otherwise delegated
  • Attend academic governance committee meetings, usually two a year
  • Engage with members of the college regarding EdCo business
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with the vice-president, education & students
  • Serve as a non-voting member of the Selkirk College Board of Governors (BOG)
  • Attend college events as a representative of EdCo and the BOG

Note: As per EdCo bylaws, the chair receives 25% release to perform these duties.

Duties of the Vice Chair

The vice chair shall perform the duties and exercise the powers of the chair when the latter is absent or unable to carry out the duties. The vice chair shall perform such duties as may be delegated by the chair and EdCo.

Duties of the Assistant to EdCo

The duties of the assistant include but are not limited to:
 

  • Issue notices of EdCo meetings
  • Prepare agendas for meetings
  • Distribute all relevant documentation for meetings to members and others, according to the bylaws
  • Preparing and distributing the minutes of meetings
  • Make the necessary meeting arrangements
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of  EdCo proceedings 
Duties of the members

The duties of the members include but are not limited to:
 

  • Review agenda packages prior to EdCo meetings
  • Attend all EdCo meetings
  • Engage with members of the college regarding EdCo business
  • Exercise their best judgement on behalf of Selkirk College and in accordance with the college’s strategic plan 
Duties of standing committee and task force members
  • Review agenda packages prior to meetings
  • Attend all meetings
  • Engage with members of the college regarding standing committee or task force business
  • Complete assigned work to ensure goals of the standing committee or task force are met
